The Vancouver Free Fridge at Kindred

2025 showed us that solidarity and offering accessible food to our friends, family and neighbors is a need in our community. High cost of living has stretched budgets thin, federal assistance programs have proven un-reliable, and food banks have a barrier to entry - especially for working families. We at Kindred Vancouver believe food is a human right and knew we had to make moves to help address this need.

We’ve welcomed the Vancouver Free Fridge Project (VFF) to our back parking lot. The VFF is a volunteer run mutual aid network (Not a non-profit) run by the community, for the community in Vancouver, Wa. VFF values solidarity, not charity by providing free fridges and pantries accessible 24/7, available to all on a take-what-you-need and leave-what-you-can basis. In addition to our location in Uptown Vancouver there are two other locations, one in Hazel Dell and one in East Vancouver. See the VFF map here https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewer?mid=1kpa7_41U5vuxHRo8fkUzbvAThHKovpI&ll=45.65177728948303%2C-122.59421935000002&z=12

There are several ways to support this project. You can donate food for the fridges and pantries. Acceptable food options include: Fruits and Vegetables, pre-packaged shelf stable foods, commercially prepared foods (labeled and packaged by a retailer), self prepared offerings (obtain a food handlers card and list any potential allergens). For a detailed outline on food guidelines, please see https://docs.google.com/document/d/1w2ndII388QONPUOjV-k5Rq3mXJBJ1LPs2eMJ3CclHVk/edit?usp=drivesdk. You can also contact a retailer that has potential left overs and coordinate a pick up for that product then bring it to a VFF, instead of it going to waste.

You can also volunteer for a maintenance shift where you’ll: check food dates and fridge temps to ensure safety, wipe down surfaces to maintain cleanliness, check maintenance supply stock, remove trash and non-accepted items, take a few photos of current inventory and post updates to the Slack app. This process typically takes around 15-30 minutes and can be done at your convenience. You can also donate a skill or monetarily. Reach out if you want to volunteer skills in construction, networking and communication, graphic design and more. VFF also accepts monetary donations to support what they do. Learn more at https://vancouverfreefridgeproject.weebly.com/other-ways-to-support-vffp.html.

Join us in supporting our community today! We can help each other thrive.
