Western Red Cedar Leaf

$4.50

Widespread throughout the Pacific Northwest, Western red cedar is a majestic, aromatic tree native to North America, belonging to the cypress family (Cupressaceae). Revered for centuries, this towering conifer thrives in old-growth forests and along streambanks, offering ecological benefits and countless practical applications. Known as "Canoewood" among Native American tribes, Western red cedar played an integral role in daily life, being used for shelter, boat making, basket weaving, crafts, and medicine. Its contributions earned it the nickname "Arbor Vitae," or "Tree of Life," a title later popularized in Europe after its close relative, Thuja occidentalis, reportedly cured Jacques Cartier’s crew of scurvy during the 16th century.

Herbal Significance

Western red cedar leaves, often referred to as cedar leaf, are highly aromatic and valued for their medicinal and ceremonial uses. In herbalism, cedar is considered antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal, making it a natural ally for immune support and topical applications. Traditionally, the leaves were prepared as steam inhalations for respiratory relief, infused into oils or salves for skin health, and used in cleansing smudges to clear spaces energetically and spiritually. The scent of cedar leaf is grounding and resinous, evoking the serene energy of ancient forests.

Preparation & Uses

  • Topical: Cedar leaf infusions or extracts are applied to the skin to address minor irritations and promote healing.
  • Tea (Cautiously): Infused as a tea, cedar leaf offers a warming, aromatic flavor and is used sparingly in small amounts. Note: Avoid excessive consumption due to the presence of thujone, a compound that can be toxic in high doses.
  • Incense & Smudge: The dried leaves can be burned as incense for cleansing and ceremonial use.
  • Steam Inhalation: As an aromatic steam, it supports respiratory health and clears congestion.
  • Infusions & Extracts: Often used in salves, tinctures, or oils for its antimicrobial and soothing properties.

Cedar has long been used by Indigenous tribes for purification and spiritual protection. Its aromatic smoke is believed to ward off negative energies, cleanse spaces, and create a sacred environment. As part of moon ceremonies or other rituals, it’s a plant ally for grounding, renewal, and connection to the natural world.

Western red cedar is a precious resource with deep ecological and cultural significance. As it thrives in old-growth forests, sustainable harvesting and mindful use are essential to preserve this “Tree of Life” for future generations.

Caution: Due to the presence of thujone, cedar leaf should be used with care and under the guidance of a knowledgeable herbalist if consumed internally. Pregnant individuals and those with health conditions should avoid internal use.
